The length of time your tan will last depends on how well you prepared before the session, and how you take care of your skin after the session. The most important aspect is to exfoliate before the session. The shallower the dead skin layer is, the longer it will take to fully build up and shed off. This means that the more perfectly you exfoliate your skin before spray tanning, the more even your tan will be and the longer it will last before fading. Additionally, moisturizing your skin every day will prevent premature exfoliation through drying. Ask a staff member which exfoliants and moisturizers are suggested to get the best results.

My First Tanning Experience...

I remember the first tanning salon I went to back in 2002, it was a tiny little “mom and pop” tanning salon called Caribbean Tan. It was pretty much a hole in the wall tanning place with small rooms that barely fit the tanning beds. Their basic bed was a 20 minute regular white bed with no facial tanners, there was no music expect for the boom box at the reception desk and each tanning room had a small little fan that hardly worked. The walls were all white except for the framed picture of the beach that was located in the back of the salon.

Will Swimming Affect My Sunless Tan?

Sunless Tans are one of our favorites at Darque Immersion Tanning! One of the questions we hear a lot of sunless tanners ask is… Will swimming affect my tan? Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the Mystic Tan results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.

-Make sure your using an indoor tanning lotion, using a lotion tans you 70% more than you would without one; It would be like going in a 20 minute bed for 7 minutes.

-If you are using a lotion, try a different one. Normally people start using tanning accelerators which are for beginning tanners. These lotions help you to build your base tan.
You want to continue using these up until you cannot get any darker or you have reached your tanning plateau. At this point, you want to switch to a tanning lotion that has a bronzer or a tingle factor to take you past that tanning plateau to get you a bit darker. -If you have been switching up your lotions, try switching up your beds. Changing the amount of UVA and UVB rays that you are exposed to can entice the skin to produce more melanin and develop a darker tan. 1. You need to prepare your skin to tan. Dry skin doesn't tan as well, dry skin, reflects light, instead of absorbing it. This can mean you will get a sunburn easier as well. By using lotion your skin is moist, and healthy and supple, ready to take in the sun.

2. You need to protect your skin! Most of the premium brand lotions are high quality lotions. Many lotions are aloe vera based, which is widely known for its positive effects on the skin during moderate to heavy sun exposure. When using a tanning lotion, the main active ingredients are those which accelerate your skins ability to generate melanin. The process by which the skin tans - simplified - is the conversion of Tyrosine, to Melanin, by the UVA portion of light. Your body produces some Tyrsosine, but not enough to actually keep up a high-quality unit like the matrix, especially with its low UVB output. It's similar to having the fastest brick wall building crew, and no bricks. So by not using lotion, you are going to have to a lot more, to get the same tan. Chewing up MORE minutes and increasing your total UV exposure which puts added stress on the skin, especially without the moisturizing qualities of lotion to take care of your skin.

3. You want to prolong your tan. By using lotion, along with some other very basic skincare principles like exfoliating during your shower, your skin will stay healthy, and thus stay tanned longer. This means less tanning, using less sessions tha you are paying for, and keeping the same look.

Supermodel Calls Sunscreen ‘Poison’

One of the world’s top supermodels has stirred up a storm in the cosmetic dermatology and pharmaceutical world by publicly calling sunscreen ‘poison’ and saying that she does not use it. “I cannot put this poison on my skin,” Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen told the London Daily Mail this week. “I do not use anything synthetic.”

Bundchen’s comments reflect concerns the independent Environmental Working Group has raised about sunscreen — which contains toxins but which is not subject to legitimate product safety testing, according to the group.

A prominent dermatologist in Brazil, Dr. Doliyal Loao, responded immediately to Bundchen’s comments, telling the Daily Mail, “Sunscreen prevents damage to the skin and is of fundamental importance for the prevention of cancer. …This is not any poison, when a public person makes a statement like this, it creates confusion.”

In fact, dermatology and spokespeople like Loao are the ones creating the confusion. Sunscreen does contain toxins and suspected photo-carcinogens, and dermatology — in encouraging daily use of a product that in the United States can only properly be marketed for sunburn prevention on an occasional-use basis — is what’s confusing.

Generally the longer you leave a self tanner to process, the darker the results. The DHA or variations of DHA need time to develop. Some products can take up to 12 hours to develop fully so I recommend that you use concentrated self tanners at night so it can do it work while you are sleeping. Preparing your skin for a sunless tan will not only enhance your results but also make it last longer!

Sunless tanning products contain the active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. DHA reacts with the skins outer layer to temporarily darken your skin and give the appearance of a tan. DHA does not wash off; however, in the days following a sunless tan, dead skin cells are sloughed off, fading your tan gradually. Your body gains a thin layer of dead skin every day. However light and unseen this layer may be, it will prevent the spray tan from reaching your fresh skin, so you’ll want to be sure that your skin is perfectly prepaired!

Start preparing your body several days or even a week in advance. Skin that is used to a regular routine of exfoliation and moisturizer is more likely to have a beautiful sunless tan!

Get out your new exfoliation scrub and hop in the shower or bath. Use your exfoliant with a wash cloth or bath puff and scrub, scrub, scrub! This will remove the top layers of dead skin cells by exposing a fresh, new layer of skin that can readily absorb the sunless tanning product. Give drier body parts like elbows, knees, ankles, hands and feet extra attention. If you need to shave or wax your legs definitely do so before your sunless tan. If you will be sprayed with the solution containing a bronzer it is best to shave or wax one or two days before, as the bronzer gets into the newly created pores and can give you a "spotty" look. If the solution is clear that is unlikely to happen.

Keep your skin supple and moist by moisturizing every day after you exfoliate. This will help the sunless spray to evenly adhere. On the day you receive your sunless spray your skin must be free of lotions, makeup, perfumes, deodorant or anything else that could leave a residue on the skin.

The sun is a good thing. Dr. Michael Holick, posing in a tanning bed, says that ultraviolet radiation helps the body produce Vitamin D.

If it bears out, it will challenge one of medicine's most fundamental beliefs: that people need to coat themselves with sunscreen whenever they're in the sun. Doing that may actually contribute to far more cancer deaths than it prevents, some researchers think.

The vitamin is D, nicknamed the "sunshine vitamin" because the skin makes it from ultraviolet rays. Sunscreen blocks its production, but dermatologists and health agencies have long preached that such lotions are needed to prevent skin cancer.

Now some scientists are questioning that advice.

The reason is that vitamin D increasingly seems important for preventing and even treating many types of cancer. In the last three months alone, four separate studies found it helped protect against lymphoma and cancers of the prostate, lung and, ironically, the skin. The strongest evidence is for colon cancer.

Many people aren't getting enough vitamin D. It's hard to do from food and fortified milk alone, and supplements are problematic.

So the thinking is this: Even if too much sun leads to skin cancer, which is rarely deadly, too little sun may be worse.

No one is suggesting that people fry on a beach. But many scientists believe that "safe sun" — 15 minutes or so a few times a week without sunscreen — is not only possible but helpful to health.

One is Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a Harvard University professor of medicine and nutrition who laid out his case in a keynote lecture at a recent American Association for Cancer Research meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

His research suggests that vitamin D might help prevent 30 deaths for each one caused by skin cancer.

This weekend me and one of my friends went to Universal Studios in Orlando!! It was actually my first time there and all I can say is I had an absolute blast!! I'm sure most you of have been there before but Universal is composed of two different parks that have totally different feels to both of them. We got fast passes for both of the parks which I totally recommend to everyone that goes. They only cost about 30dollars for both parks and allow you to jump all the lines. It is sooo nice (especially when its HOT out like it was on Friday) to be able to go right to the front of all the lines. I think the most time we waited was fifteen minutes or less!Islands of Adventure is the first park we visited. We rode pretty much every single ride in under 3 hours!! All of the rides are so much fun! Each ride has it's own theme and they do an amazing job of decorating everything to make it seem as real as possible. The Jurassic Park ride is a water ride where you are pretending to be on a tour boat that "accidentally" goes off course into the dangerous T Rex holding area. You are floating through a jungle maze where you are confronted with all kinds of dinosaurs (that look totally real!) that actually come right up to your face! All of the sudden....a big T Rex is right in front of you!! It looks like your boat is going to go straight into his mouth...and then you drop down a huge waterfall!! After we rode all of the rides..we had to decide where to eat for lunch. They have soo many restaurants to choose from including the Nascar Cafe, the Hard Rock Cafe, the Bob Marley Bar, and many many more. We of course had to eat at my favorite place in the entire world....Margaritaville!!!!! Since I was a little girl I have been a huge "parrot head". The restaurant is sooo cool. It has planes, sails, volcanoes, and everything Jimmy Buffett!!! I would definitely recommend the crab cake sandwich and of course the Cheeseburger in Paradise!!!! Don't forget the margaritas!! After lunch we moved on from Islands of Adventure to Universal. Universal has more 3-D, 4-D, and virtual rides and movies, which I absolutely loved! My favorite one was the Simpsons ride. I am still completely amazed on how they make these rides feel so real when you actually aren't moving much at all. Anyways, all in all our trip to Universal Studios was so much fun and I cannot wait to go back again! :) <3 Nicole
